What is R2P
The Responsibility to Protect is an international standard that tries to guarantee that the international community will never again fail to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. In response to the international community’s inability to adequately respond to mass atrocities committed in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s, this concept evolved. Three pillars of R2P
First Pillar – Every state bears the responsibility to protect its citizens from four types of mass atrocities: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing.

Third Pillar – The international community must be ready to take appropriate collective action in a prompt and decisive way, in conformity with the UN Charter, if a state is clearly failing to protect its populations.
